Malaysia warns of thunderstorms in parts of Penang, Pahang and Selangor until 10am

KUALA LUMPUR, March 2, 2026 — The Malaysian Meteorological Department (MetMalaysia) has issued a thunderstorm warning for select areas in Penang, Pahang and Selangor, cautioning residents that thunderstorms, heavy rain and strong winds are expected to continue in these regions until approximately 10:00am today.

According to the weather alert posted by MetMalaysia on its official Facebook page early this morning, the warning covers both southwest and northeast districts of Penang, including coastal areas that typically experience weather changes during frontal systems. In Pahang, the districts under advisory include Raub, Jerantut and Temerloh. Meanwhile, the storm alert extends to parts of Selangor, specifically Klang and Kuala Langat — areas that have seen sporadic heavy rain and strong wind gusts in recent days.

MetMalaysia explained that thunderstorm warnings are generally issued when radar and observational data indicate that rainfall intensity could exceed 20 millimetres per hour and that the conditions are either imminent or expected to persist for more than an hour. These advisories are typically short‑term in nature, lasting no more than six hours for each issuance, and are designed to alert the public about potentially hazardous conditions including localized flooding, reduced visibility, and gusty winds.

In issuing this latest alert, the department said its routine monitoring of unstable weather patterns across the country — influenced by regional atmospheric conditions — has shown that cumulus and cumulonimbus cloud formations capable of producing thunderstorms have been active over parts of northern and central Peninsular Malaysia. The influence of moisture‑laden winds from the South China Sea and local convection are believed to be contributing to these weather disturbances.

Residents and commuters in the affected areas have been advised to remain vigilant, especially if they are travelling or planning outdoor activities this morning. Motorists are reminded to drive with caution on wet roads, and those living near rivers or low‑lying areas are urged to watch for signs of sudden water rise due to intense rainfall.

In addition to the on‑land thunderstorm warnings, MetMalaysia also issues marine advisories for coastal and near‑shore waters, as thunderstorms over marine environments can generate strong winds and rough seas, posing risks to small craft and fishermen operating off the shores of Penang, Perak and Selangor. These maritime warnings form part of the department’s broader alert system, which aims to safeguard both land and sea activities during unstable weather episodes.

As the morning progresses and the advisory remains in force, authorities recommend that people keep track of further updates from MetMalaysia’s official platforms — including its website, mobile app and social media channels — to stay informed about any changes or extensions to the thunderstorm warning.
