Man Dies After Car Plunges 80m Into Ravine in Genting Sempah, Gombak

GOMBAK, March 9 — A man has died after the car he was driving plunged about 80 metres into a ravine on the Genting Sempah–Gombak road in Selangor on Monday afternoon, authorities said.

The incident occurred at around 3pm near a sharp bend on the scenic but hazardous mountain stretch, which connects Gombak to Genting Highlands. The road is frequently used by commuters and tourists heading up to the highland resorts as well as by heavy vehicles.

Emergency services received a distress call shortly after the crash and dispatched personnel from the Selangor Fire and Rescue Department as well as other rescue units to the scene.

Crash and Rescue Operation

Upon arrival, rescuers found the vehicle at the bottom of a deep ravine, approximately 80 metres below the road level. Firefighters and search teams had to carefully navigate the steep terrain to reach the wreckage.

Despite efforts to extract the occupant from the car, the driver was found dead at the scene. Authorities have yet to release the identity of the victim as family notification was still underway.

The vehicle was severely damaged, indicating the force of the fall, and rescue personnel said there was no indication that anyone else was inside the car at the time of the crash.

Road Conditions and Hazards

The Genting Sempah–Gombak route is known for its tight bends and steep edges, particularly in sections leading up to Genting Highlands. Drivers are often urged to exercise caution, adhere to speed limits, and avoid distracted driving to prevent accidents.

Police said preliminary investigations suggest the vehicle may have lost control while navigating a curve, causing it to veer off the road and fall into the ravine. However, investigations are ongoing and further details are expected once a full assessment is completed.

Police Investigation

The case is being examined by the Gombak district police, who said that alcohol, mobile phone use and reckless driving are among the factors being investigated to determine the cause of the crash. However, no official determination has yet been made.

Authorities have pledged to release more information once the investigation progresses and relevant tests, such as vehicle inspections and witness statements, are completed.

Safety Reminder

In light of the fatal incident, traffic authorities issued a reminder to motorists to drive carefully, especially on winding roads such as the Genting Sempah–Gombak stretch, which has a history of serious accidents due to its terrain.

Drivers are encouraged to slow down, follow road signage, and avoid overtaking on blind corners. Weather conditions, particularly rain, can make the roads more slippery and dangerous, heightening the risk of crashes.
