KUALA LUMPUR, March 13 — Firefighters responded to a forest fire that broke out on a hillside near the Putrajaya Toll Plaza along the Kuala Lumpur–Putrajaya Expressway (MEX) on Wednesday evening. The blaze affected an estimated 0.8 hectares of forested land in the area.
According to the Selangor Fire and Rescue Department, the emergency call reporting the fire was received at around 4.12pm, prompting an immediate deployment of firefighting teams to the scene. A total of 21 personnel from the Seri Kembangan Fire and Rescue Station, assisted by the Cyberjaya station, were mobilised to contain the flames.
Firefighters Contain the Blaze
Operations commander Senior Fire Officer II Mohd Fadlee Kamaruddin reported that the fire involved a hillside forest area near the highway corridor. Firefighters quickly began suppression efforts to prevent the blaze from spreading to nearby vegetation and residential zones.
Emergency crews deployed two 200-foot (60-metre) hose lines connected to engine pumps while also using fire beaters to control the flames in areas where vehicles could not reach easily. These tools helped firefighters attack the blaze directly and limit its expansion across the hillside terrain.
No Injuries or Property Damage Reported
Authorities confirmed that the incident did not involve any casualties or damage to buildings or nearby infrastructure. Rapid intervention by firefighters played a crucial role in preventing the fire from spreading further, especially toward residential areas located near the highway.
Officials said the situation was brought under control relatively quickly, although firefighters continued monitoring the area to ensure that no remaining hotspots could reignite the blaze.
Environmental Concerns Remain
Forest and hillside fires can pose significant environmental risks, particularly during dry weather conditions when vegetation becomes highly flammable. Such incidents can also generate thick smoke that may affect nearby traffic and residential communities.
Authorities often urge the public to avoid activities that may spark fires in forested areas, including open burning or improperly discarded cigarette butts.
The Malaysian Fire and Rescue Department continues to monitor the site to ensure the fire is fully extinguished and that the surrounding environment remains safe.
