U.S. Military Refueling Aircraft Crashes in Western Iraq Amid Conflicting Claims

Kuala Lumpur, — A U.S. military refueling aircraft has crashed in western Iraq, prompting ongoing rescue operations, according to statements from U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM).

The aircraft involved is a Boeing KC‑135 Stratotanker, a long‑range aerial refueling plane that supports combat and support missions by refueling other aircraft in flight.

CENTCOM confirmed the plane went down on March 12, 2026, while operating over friendly airspace as part of military operations linked to ongoing regional tensions.

Rescue Operations Underway

Officials said another KC‑135 aircraft involved in the same operation landed safely, but the downed tanker has not yet been found, and search and rescue teams remain on the ground trying to locate survivors and the crash site.

At the time of the incident, the U.S. military stated that there was no indication the crash was caused by hostile fire or friendly fire, and that the exact cause is still under investigation.

Contrasting Claim by Armed Group

Separately, a coalition of Iran‑aligned militia factions calling itself the “Islamic Resistance in Iraq” has claimed responsibility for shooting down the aircraft. In their statement, the group asserts they targeted the plane in what they describe as a defense of Iraqi airspace.

However, U.S. officials have denied hostile action was responsible, emphasizing that preliminary information suggests a non‑combat incident.

Context of Ongoing Conflict

The crash comes amid heightened military activity across the Middle East following the start of broader hostilities earlier in 2026. Multiple aircraft incidents have already occurred in the region during this period, including loss of U.S. jets and other aerial assets.

At this stage, there is no official confirmation on casualties from the KC‑135 crash. CENTCOM has stated that it will provide updates as more information becomes available.
