Kuala Lumpur,— The Malaysian government has decided to maintain the subsidised price of RON95 petrol at RM1.99 per litre under the BUDI95 initiative, despite rising global oil prices. The decision was announced by the Ministry of Finance (MOF) as part of efforts to protect citizens from the impact of volatile energy markets.
According to the ministry, the government will also increase the BUDI Diesel cash assistance to RM300 per month, up from RM200, for eligible recipients during the interim period. The additional RM100 payment is expected to begin on March 17, 2026.
The move comes as global crude oil prices surged following tensions in West Asia, which pushed Brent crude prices to around US$119 per barrel on March 9 before easing to about US$90. The spike in global prices has caused retail fuel prices to rise, with RON95 and RON97 increasing by about 60 sen per litre and diesel rising by 80 sen per litre in the market.
For the period of March 12–18, 2026, the retail prices without subsidies were set at RM3.27 per litre for RON95, RM3.85 for RON97, and RM3.92 for diesel in Peninsular Malaysia. However, the government continues to cushion the public by keeping the subsidised RON95 price at RM1.99.
In addition, subsidised diesel prices remain in place for key sectors. Public land transport and goods transport in Peninsular Malaysia continue to receive diesel at RM1.88 and RM2.15 per litre, while consumers in Sabah and Sarawak still pay RM2.15 per litre.
The Ministry of Finance stated that the MADANI government remains committed to protecting Malaysians through targeted subsidies and cash assistance, while balancing fiscal responsibility and preventing subsidy leakages.
