Singapore and Malaysia Dominate Southeast Asia University Rankings

March 2026 — Universities in Singapore and Malaysia are leading a new regional university ranking focused on Southeast Asia, reflecting the region’s rapid progress in higher education, research and academic collaboration.

The pilot ranking, developed using the methodology of Times Higher Education, analysed 195 universities across Southeast Asia to evaluate their performance based on research output, teaching quality, industry collaboration and international outlook.

Singapore Universities Take Top Two Positions

According to the ranking, the National University of Singapore secured the top position in the region, followed by Nanyang Technological University in second place.

Both institutions are globally recognised universities and consistently rank among the best in the world for research performance and academic excellence.

Experts say Singapore’s strong investment in research infrastructure and international collaboration has helped its universities achieve global recognition.

Malaysian Universities Dominate Regional Representation

While Singapore secured the top two positions, Malaysian universities dominated the top 50 rankings, reflecting the country’s strong higher-education ecosystem.

Among the leading Malaysian institutions was Universiti Teknologi Petronas, which ranked third in Southeast Asia. Other Malaysian universities also placed within the top ten, including University of Malaya, Sunway University, and Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia.

Overall, Malaysia secured 18 positions in the region’s top 50 universities, making it one of the strongest performers in Southeast Asia’s higher-education landscape.

Indonesia Has the Most Institutions Ranked

Although Singapore and Malaysia dominate the top of the ranking, Indonesia has the largest number of universities included overall, with 35 institutions appearing in the list.

The country’s flagship university, University of Indonesia, ranked 22nd in the region.

Education experts say Indonesia’s higher-education sector is expanding rapidly and could soon become one of the largest university systems in the world in terms of student population.

Southeast Asia Emerging as Global Education Hub

Analysts say the new ranking highlights Southeast Asia’s growing influence in global education and research.

With strong economic growth, a young population and increasing investment in universities, the region is becoming an important hub for international students, academic research and innovation.

Experts believe that stronger collaboration among ASEAN universities will further strengthen the region’s academic competitiveness on the global stage.
