Malaysia Announces Additional Aidilfitri Public Holiday, Says PM Anwar Ibrahim

Kuala Lumpur — Anwar Ibrahim has announced an additional public holiday for Hari Raya Aidilfitri, giving Malaysians a longer festive break to celebrate with family and travel back to their hometowns.

The Prime Minister said the extra holiday will depend on the official date of 1 Syawal, which determines when Aidilfitri is celebrated. If Hari Raya falls on Friday (March 20), the government will declare Monday (March 23) as the additional holiday. However, if Aidilfitri is celebrated on Saturday (March 21), the extra holiday will be given on Friday (March 20).

According to Anwar, the early announcement is intended to help Malaysians plan their festive travel and preparations more smoothly during the Hari Raya period. The government also hopes the move will allow families to spend more time together after completing the fasting month of Ramadan.

The announcement was made during the National Consumer Day 2026 event in Kota Kinabalu, where the Prime Minister also highlighted measures to ensure stable prices of essential goods during the festive season.

With the additional holiday, Malaysians can expect a longer Aidilfitri break this year, providing greater convenience for those returning to their hometowns across the country to celebrate the festival with loved ones.
