Anwar Ibrahim Says Malaysia’s True Strength Lies in Unity After Sabah Visit

KUALA LUMPUR — Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim has reaffirmed that Malaysia’s true strength lies in the unity of its people, not merely in its natural resources, following his recent visit to the East Malaysian state of Sabah.

In a message shared on social media after his visit, Anwar said that Malaysia’s stability and long-term progress depend on the ability of its citizens to remain united and work together to build a prosperous nation despite various global and domestic challenges.

The prime minister explained that his visit to Sabah gave him the opportunity to meet people from different backgrounds, including local leaders, civil servants, small business owners, traders, and young Malaysians. According to him, these interactions reflect the diversity and resilience of Malaysian society, which he described as a key pillar of the country’s strength.

Anwar noted that Sabah represents an important reminder that Malaysia’s success is not solely dependent on natural wealth such as oil, gas, or other resources. Instead, he stressed that mutual respect, consensus, and cooperation among citizens are what truly sustain the nation’s stability and development.

He also reiterated the commitment of the MADANI government to continue implementing and honouring the Malaysia Agreement 1963, which outlines the rights and roles of Sabah and Sarawak within the Malaysian federation. Ensuring the proper implementation of this agreement, he said, remains essential to safeguarding the welfare and interests of the people in East Malaysia.

During his visit on Sunday, the prime minister participated in several official and community events in Sabah. Among them was the 2026 National Consumers Day celebration held in Kota Kinabalu, where he officiated the programme aimed at strengthening consumer awareness and protection nationwide.

Anwar also attended the Mini Keadilan Convention and officiated the Sabah state-level annual general meeting of party branches. The visit included meetings with local leaders and party members as well as engagements with residents across the state.

In addition, he visited the Ramadan Bazaar at the University Apartments in Sepanggar, where he met traders and members of the public, before concluding the trip with the MADANI Iftar Ceremony, a communal breaking-of-fast event attended by local residents and community leaders.

The visit is part of the federal government’s ongoing efforts to strengthen ties with Sabah and Sarawak while promoting inclusive development and national unity. Political observers say Anwar’s remarks highlight the administration’s focus on social cohesion as a foundation for Malaysia’s economic and political stability.
