UAE Reopens Airspace Following Temporary Closure Amid Missile and Drone Threats

KUALA LUMPUR – The United Arab Emirates (UAE) has officially resumed all aviation operations and reopened its national airspace on Tuesday morning, March 17, 2026. The move follows a brief but critical two-hour suspension triggered by heightened security concerns and regional military tensions.

The General Civil Aviation Authority (GCAA) confirmed in a formal statement that air traffic across the country has returned to normalcy. The decision to lift the restrictions was made after a comprehensive risk assessment of safety and operational procedures was conducted by national security experts.

The temporary closure was described by authorities as an “extraordinary precautionary measure” designed to safeguard the country’s sovereign territory and ensure the absolute safety of passengers and flight crews.

“Our absolute priority remains the safety of every passenger and crew member. All operations are being conducted in strict adherence to the highest global aviation standards to ensure a secure travel experience,” the GCAA stated.

The grounding of flights comes at a time of significant geopolitical friction. The UAE Ministry of Defense earlier confirmed that its air defense systems were activated to intercept a new wave of missile and drone attacks originating from Iran.

This latest escalation follows a series of incidents on Monday, March 16, where a drone strike reportedly ignited a fire at a fuel farm near Dubai International Airport (DXB). Additional reports indicated similar fire incidents at the Fujairah oil industrial zone. These events are unfolding as part of a wider conflict involving the United States, Israel, and Iran, which has now entered its 18th day.

As one of the world’s most vital aviation hubs, the two-hour closure of UAE airspace sent ripples through global flight schedules. Dubai International Airport, the primary gateway for international transit, saw several flights diverted or delayed during the shutdown.

With the reopening, airlines are working to clear the backlog of passengers. However, aviation experts suggest that while the “all-clear” has been given, travelers should expect minor knock-on delays throughout the day as schedules are recalibrated.

Authorities have urged the public and international travelers to remain vigilant and informed:

  1. Verify Flight Status: Passengers are strongly advised to contact their respective airlines to confirm departure and arrival times before heading to the airport.
  2. Rely on Official Sources: The UAE government has cautioned against the spread of misinformation, urging citizens and tourists to rely solely on official state channels and verified news outlets for updates regarding airspace status and security.
  3. Airport Arrival: Despite the normalization of traffic, travelers are encouraged to arrive at terminals early to accommodate any additional security screenings or administrative adjustments.

The swift reopening of the airspace signals the UAE’s confidence in its defense capabilities and its commitment to maintaining its status as a secure global crossroads for commerce and tourism.
