Israel Expands Ground Invasion in Southern Lebanon: Humanitarian Crisis Looms

Kuala Lumpur – The conflict between Israel and the militant group Hezbollah in southern Lebanon has escalated, as Israel deploys additional troops to expand its ground operations. The move is framed as an effort to create a “buffer zone” against rocket attacks and militant infiltration, but its impact on civilians is raising serious international concerns.

UN agencies and humanitarian organizations warn that this escalation could trigger a major humanitarian disaster in Lebanon. Hundreds of thousands of people have already been affected, with many forced to flee their homes. Basic infrastructure, including schools and hospitals, has been damaged by airstrikes and ground operations. UNICEF reports that hundreds of thousands of children have lost access to education and are facing severe psychological trauma due to the conflict.

Within Israel, some opposition leaders have criticized the military’s approach as lacking a clear strategy. They warn that this multi-front conflict could exhaust the military and potentially destabilize the country internally. Meanwhile, Iranian officials highlight the broader consequences of the war, with millions of people at risk due to military operations driven by the US-Israel alliance.

Historically, Israeli invasions of Lebanon are not new. The creation of a “buffer zone” in southern Lebanon raises old concerns about territorial occupation and escalation. This time, however, the risks are not only military but also humanitarian. Lebanon, already grappling with political and economic crises, now faces additional pressure from a widening armed conflict.

In my view, Israel’s expansion of ground operations should be approached with caution. An overly aggressive military approach risks worsening the humanitarian crisis, triggering mass displacement, and deepening sectarian divisions in Lebanon. Sustainable solutions must include strong international diplomacy, pressure for a ceasefire, and real humanitarian aid for civilians.

This conflict reminds the world that modern warfare is not only about military strategy but also about humanity. Without serious attention, Lebanon could face a crisis far worse than the military conflict itself.
