Malaysia to Issue Diplomatic Note Rejecting Renewed Philippine Claims Over Sabah

KUALA LUMPUR – The Malaysian government, through the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (Wisma Putra), has announced it will formally issue a diplomatic note to the Philippines to categorically reject any renewed claims over the state of Sabah.

Foreign Minister Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan stated that the move is a standard response to recent statements made by Philippine politicians, emphasizing that Sabah’s sovereignty within the Malaysian Federation is non-negotiable and legally settled.

The announcement follows recent calls by Philippine Senator Robin Padilla, who urged President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. to revive the country’s claim over the resource-rich territory on Borneo. Speaking to reporters during his Aidilfitri open house in Rantau, Mohamad Hasan characterized these periodic claims as a recurring tactic used to divert domestic attention.

“This is not a new issue. Every time there are internal issues in their country, certain parties try to shift the focus by raising matters like this,” Mohamad said. “We will send a diplomatic note as we always do, reiterating that Sabah is an integral part of Malaysia.”

The Foreign Minister reaffirmed that Sabah’s status was established through legitimate international processes. He highlighted two critical historical milestones:

  • The Cobbold Commission: The democratic process where the people of Sabah officially chose to join the Federation of Malaysia.
  • United Nations (UN) Recognition: The findings of the commission and the subsequent formation of Malaysia were formally recognized and ratified by the UN.

“If they wish to continue talking about Sabah, that is their choice. However, we reject what has been stated because their claim is entirely baseless,” he added.

Despite the recurring rhetoric, Mohamad Hasan expressed confidence that the statements would not jeopardize bilateral relations. He noted that such remarks often stem from individual political figures rather than representing the official, unified stance of the Philippine government.

The Minister also pointed out the importance of regional cooperation, especially with the Philippines serving as the ASEAN Chair this year. He emphasized that while Malaysia will always defend its territorial integrity, it remains committed to maintaining a positive relationship with its neighbor.
