Oil Tanker Catches Fire After Suspected Iranian Drone Attack

DUBAI, March 31 — A large oil tanker caught fire after being hit by a suspected Iranian drone attack in waters near the Gulf region, raising fresh concerns about maritime safety and escalating tensions linked to the ongoing Middle East conflict.

Authorities confirmed that the tanker, identified as the Kuwait-flagged Al-Salmi, was struck by a drone while operating near the strategic shipping routes in the region. The attack caused significant damage to the vessel and triggered a fire onboard, although emergency crews were later able to bring the blaze under control.

According to officials and shipping data, the tanker was carrying a massive cargo of crude oil and was believed to be heading toward Asia when the attack occurred. The vessel reportedly sustained damage to its hull following the strike, but authorities said there were no casualties among the crew members and no oil spill was detected after the incident.

The incident is the latest in a series of attacks on commercial vessels in the region since tensions escalated after military strikes involving Iran, the United States, and Israel earlier this year. The conflict has increasingly affected vital maritime routes, particularly around the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world’s most critical oil shipping lanes.

Security analysts warn that such attacks pose a serious threat to global energy supply chains, as a significant portion of the world’s crude oil passes through these waters each day. Any disruption in the area could quickly impact international oil prices and global trade.

Despite the dramatic fire on board the tanker, emergency response teams were able to contain the flames before they spread further across the vessel. Authorities are continuing investigations into the attack and monitoring maritime activity in the region closely.

Meanwhile, shipping companies operating in the Gulf have reportedly increased security measures and rerouted some vessels to avoid high-risk zones as fears grow that the conflict could further escalate.

The attack underscores the growing risks facing commercial shipping amid the wider geopolitical tensions unfolding across the Middle East.
