Explosion Triggers Fire at Chinese Prayer Shop in Kuala Krai, Couple Suffers Burns

KUALA KRAI, April 3 — A powerful explosion triggered a fire that destroyed a shop selling Chinese prayer items in Kuala Krai, leaving the shop owners — a married couple — suffering from burn injuries.

According to the Fire and Rescue Department of Malaysia, the incident occurred at around 8:30 pm on Wednesday night at a premises located in the Central Park commercial area. Emergency responders received a distress call shortly after the explosion was heard by nearby residents and shop workers.

A firefighting team from the Kuala Krai Fire and Rescue Station, supported by personnel from the Sungai Durian station and a volunteer fire unit from Guchil, was dispatched immediately to the scene. In total, 21 firefighters participated in the operation to bring the blaze under control.

When firefighters arrived, they discovered that the shop — which sells Chinese religious and prayer items — had already been engulfed in flames. Officials later confirmed that approximately 90 percent of the premises was destroyed by the fire.

The couple who owned the shop managed to escape but sustained burn injuries during the incident. Both victims were rushed to Sultan Ismail Petra Hospital for medical treatment. Authorities have not yet released details regarding the severity of their injuries.

Eyewitnesses described hearing a loud explosion moments before the fire spread rapidly through the shop. One witness, who worked at a nearby grocery store, said she immediately contacted emergency services after seeing flames erupt from the building.

Firefighters worked quickly to prevent the blaze from spreading to neighbouring shops in the busy commercial area. After several hours of firefighting operations, the fire was successfully contained and the situation brought under control.

Authorities have launched an investigation to determine the exact cause of the explosion and subsequent fire. Initial assessments suggest the blast originated from inside the shop, though officials have not ruled out other possibilities pending a full forensic examination.

Incidents involving explosions in commercial premises are relatively rare but can result in significant property damage and injuries if combustible materials are present. Authorities have urged business owners to ensure that electrical systems and storage practices meet safety standards to prevent similar accidents.

The case remains under investigation as fire officials continue to examine the site and gather evidence to determine how the explosion occurred.
