Malaysia Halts UNIFIL Patrols in Lebanon, Seeks UN Review Over Rising Security Risks

KUALA LUMPUR, April, 2026 — Malaysia has temporarily halted patrol operations involving its peacekeeping contingent in Lebanon amid growing security concerns in the region. The decision reflects increasing caution as tensions continue to affect the operational safety of international forces deployed under the United Nations peacekeeping mission.
According to Malaysia’s Defence Ministry, the move was taken to protect personnel from the Malaysian Battalion (MALBATT) serving under the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL). Malaysian authorities have also requested a comprehensive review from the United Nations regarding the current security environment in southern Lebanon. The temporary suspension of patrol activities comes as regional instability continues to intensify, raising concerns about the safety of peacekeeping forces stationed along sensitive border areas. Malaysian officials emphasized that the decision does not mean withdrawing troops from the mission, but rather reassessing operational procedures to ensure the safety of personnel.
Malaysia has long been a contributor to the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon, with its MALBATT troops playing a key role in monitoring ceasefire agreements and supporting humanitarian stability in southern Lebanon. The peacekeeping mission itself was originally established following the Lebanon War, aimed at preventing further hostilities and maintaining security along the border.
