Malaysia Issues Nationwide Thunderstorm Alert Until Evening, MetMalaysia Warns

KUALA LUMPUR — The Malaysian Meteorological Department has issued a nationwide weather warning for severe thunderstorms, heavy rainfall, and strong winds, expected to persist across multiple regions in Malaysia until the evening.

In its latest advisory, MetMalaysia said the warning covers several states across Peninsular Malaysia, Sabah, and Sarawak, with rapidly changing weather conditions likely to develop throughout the day.

Widespread Thunderstorms Expected

According to MetMalaysia, the thunderstorms are expected to affect a wide range of areas, bringing intense downpours and gusty winds that could lead to localized disruptions.

The department warned that such conditions may result in:

  • Flash floods in low-lying areas
  • Traffic disruptions due to reduced visibility
  • Potential damage to property caused by strong winds

Residents in affected regions have been urged to remain alert and monitor official weather updates.

Short-Term but High-Impact Weather

MetMalaysia emphasized that while the thunderstorms are classified as short-term weather events, they may still be severe and unpredictable in nature.

Heavy rain over a short period can overwhelm drainage systems, increasing the risk of sudden flooding, particularly in urban areas.

Strong winds accompanying the storms may also pose risks to outdoor structures, trees, and vehicles.

Public Advised to Take Precautions

Authorities have advised the public to take precautionary measures, including:

  • Avoiding outdoor activities during thunderstorms
  • Staying away from open areas, trees, and unstable structures
  • Exercising caution while driving in heavy rain

Fishermen and those involved in maritime activities have also been warned to remain cautious due to potentially dangerous weather conditions at sea.

Monitoring and Updates

MetMalaysia continues to closely monitor the situation and will issue updates as necessary.

The agency encourages the public to stay informed through official channels and to follow instructions from local authorities in case of emergencies.

While the current warning is expected to last until the evening, weather conditions may continue to fluctuate depending on atmospheric developments.

Experts note that such weather patterns are common during transitional monsoon periods, but the intensity of storms can vary significantly.
