Man Killed, Family Injured After SUV Plunges Into Ravine Near Cameron Highlands

KUALA LUMPUR,April, 2026 — A tragic road accident near Cameron Highlands has claimed the life of a 44-year-old man, while his wife and four children were injured after their SUV skidded off the road and plunged into a ravine.

The incident occurred at Batu 21 along Jalan Tapah, a notoriously winding route leading to the popular highland destination. Authorities said the family’s Perodua Aruz lost control before falling into a three-metre-deep ravine and landing in a shallow river.

Victim Trapped, Pronounced Dead at Scene

Emergency services received a distress call at approximately 8:43 PM and rushed to the scene. Firefighters discovered the vehicle overturned in the river below the roadside.

The driver was found trapped inside the vehicle and had to be extricated using special rescue equipment. He was later pronounced dead at the scene by medical personnel.

Wife and Four Children Injured

The victims included the man’s 48-year-old wife, two teenage daughters aged 19 and 17, and two young sons aged nine and six. All five sustained injuries and were rescued by members of the public before being handed over to medical teams for further treatment.

Family Was En Route to Funeral

Initial reports indicate that the family was travelling from Kuala Lumpur to Cameron Highlands to attend a relative’s funeral at the time of the accident, adding a heartbreaking layer to the tragedy.

Rescue operations involved personnel from the Fire and Rescue Department, who worked to secure the scene and recover the victim.

Dangerous Highland Roads Raise Concerns

The crash has once again highlighted the risks associated with driving on steep and winding roads leading to Cameron Highlands. Narrow lanes, sharp bends, and reduced visibility — especially at night — significantly increase the likelihood of accidents.

Authorities continue to remind motorists to:

  • Drive cautiously on highland routes
  • Reduce speed on sharp curves
  • Ensure vehicles are in good condition
  • Stay alert to oncoming traffic

Ongoing Reminder for Road Safety

This incident adds to growing concerns over road safety in Malaysia, particularly on routes frequently used by families and tourists. Officials urge drivers to remain vigilant and prioritize safety to prevent similar tragedies.
