Sabah to Review Revival of Barter Trade With Southern Philippines

Kuala Lumpur – The Sabah government is set to review a proposal to revive barter trade activities between Sabah and the southern Philippines, with security and economic considerations placed as the main priorities.

Sabah Chief Minister Hajiji Noor said the state government has received various suggestions regarding the reactivation of barter trade, but a detailed assessment must be conducted before any final decision is made.

According to him, the review will focus on several important aspects, including maritime security, border control, and the potential economic benefits for local traders and Sabah’s overall economy.

He stated that the matter would be discussed further with the National Security Council and the State Development Action Council to ensure that any future implementation is carried out in a more structured and secure manner.

Hajiji made the remarks during a working visit to several security islands in Sandakan under the Chief Minister’s Security Review Programme involving the Eastern Sabah Security Command (ESSCOM) and the Eastern Sabah Safety Zone (ESSZONE).

The visit included strategic locations such as Pulau Bakungan Kecil, Pulau Selingan, and Pulau Langkayan, where the Chief Minister reviewed the preparedness of security forces operating along Sabah’s east coast waters.

He noted that security facilities in the area are currently in good condition, while additional assets have also been provided to strengthen maritime surveillance and border protection.

At the same time, Hajiji expressed confidence that the improving security situation in eastern Sabah would continue to support the state’s economic growth and tourism industry.

He added that the absence of major security incidents over the years has helped restore confidence among international tourists, especially visitors traveling to world-renowned diving destinations such as Sipadan Island.
