Kulim Floods: 33 Victims from Two Villages Seek Shelter at Temporary Relief Centre

KUALA LUMPUR, May, 2026 — A total of 33 residents from 10 families were forced to evacuate after flash floods struck several low-lying areas in Kulim district, with affected villagers seeking refuge at a temporary relief centre (Pusat Pemindahan Sementara, PPS) set up by authorities.

The victims, coming from two villages affected by continuous heavy rain, were relocated after their homes were inundated by rising floodwaters late at night. The relief centre was opened to ensure the safety and welfare of those displaced as water levels in their residential areas became unsafe.

Heavy Rain Triggers Sudden Flash Flooding

According to local authorities, the flooding was caused by intense and continuous rainfall over a short period of time, which led to rapid water accumulation in low-lying areas.

The situation escalated quickly, leaving residents with little time to protect their belongings before water entered their homes.

Officials confirmed that the affected families began evacuating late at night, with some residents moving on their own initiative after realizing the severity of the situation.

Emergency teams were later deployed to assist in evacuation efforts and monitor flood conditions.

33 Residents Evacuated to Relief Centre

A total of 33 flood victims from 10 households were officially placed at the temporary relief centre.

The evacuees include:

  • Adults
  • Elderly residents
  • Children
  • Infants

At the relief centre, basic necessities such as food, bedding, and medical support were provided to ensure the well-being of all affected families.

Authorities also confirmed that the centre was operating under coordinated disaster management procedures involving local civil defence and relief agencies.

Two Villages Affected

The flood incident affected two nearby villages in Kulim, both located in low-lying areas prone to water accumulation during heavy rainfall.

Residents reported that water levels rose quickly, leaving several homes partially submerged and forcing immediate evacuation.

While the situation has started to stabilize, authorities continue to monitor water levels in surrounding areas in case of further rainfall.

Emergency Response and Monitoring

Disaster response teams have been actively monitoring the affected zones, with authorities conducting:

  • Flood situation assessments
  • Evacuation support
  • Safety checks in residential areas
  • Monitoring of river and drainage water levels

Officials stated that weather conditions will continue to be closely observed due to the risk of recurring heavy rain in the region.

Recurring Flood Risks in Malaysia

Flooding remains a recurring natural disaster in Malaysia, particularly during periods of prolonged rainfall and monsoon transition seasons.

Experts note that flash floods are often triggered by:

  • Intense short-duration rainfall
  • Poor drainage capacity in some areas
  • Rapid river overflow
  • Low-lying residential settlements

Authorities have repeatedly urged communities in flood-prone areas to remain alert during heavy rain warnings and to prepare emergency evacuation plans when necessary.

Public Safety Advisory

Residents in surrounding areas have been advised to:

  • Stay updated with official weather alerts
  • Avoid flood-affected roads and low-lying zones
  • Prepare essential documents and emergency kits
  • Evacuate immediately if instructed by authorities

Disaster agencies have also increased readiness levels to respond to any further flooding incidents.

The flash floods in Kulim, Kedah, highlight the ongoing vulnerability of certain residential areas to heavy rainfall events.

With 33 residents now safely sheltered at a temporary relief centre, authorities continue monitoring conditions to ensure safety while recovery efforts and assessments are underway.
