Firefighters Rescue Eight Boys After River Surge at Cameron Highlands Orang Asli Settlement

KUALA LUMPUR, May, 2026 — Firefighters successfully rescued eight boys after they were stranded on rocks during a sudden river surge at Sungai Menson near the Kampung Terisu Orang Asli settlement, Cameron Highlands.

The children, aged between four and 12 years old, were safely brought to shore after a coordinated rescue operation involving firefighters from the Cameron Highlands Fire and Rescue Station.

Authorities confirmed that all victims were rescued without serious injuries and later handed over safely to their families.

Sudden Rise in River Level Traps Children

According to fire and rescue officials, the incident occurred when the river level rose rapidly due to a sudden surge of water.

The boys were believed to have been playing near the river when strong currents began to form, forcing them to move onto a large rock in the middle of the fast-flowing river.

At the time of the rescue, the children were stranded approximately 20 metres from the riverbank, unable to cross due to strong currents.

Emergency services were alerted at around 5.10pm, prompting an immediate response from firefighters stationed in Cameron Highlands.

Dramatic Rope Rescue Operation

Firefighters carried out a high-risk water rescue operation due to strong currents and unstable river conditions.

Rescue personnel used safety ropes and life jackets to reach the stranded boys. Firefighters had to carefully cross the fast-moving river before securing each child individually.

Each boy was fitted with a life jacket before being escorted across the river one by one by rescue teams.

The operation also involved assistance from additional firefighters from nearby stations to ensure safety and coordination during the rescue.

All Eight Boys Rescued Safely

Authorities confirmed that all eight children were successfully rescued by around 7.58pm, with the operation concluding shortly after.

The boys were checked on-site before being handed over to their families.

Fire officials stated that the operation ended without complications and praised the swift response of the rescue team, which helped prevent a potentially tragic outcome.

No serious injuries were reported among the children.

Fire Department Praises Quick Response

The Cameron Highlands Fire and Rescue Station chief said the swift action of firefighters and coordinated teamwork were crucial in ensuring a successful rescue.

He added that river surge incidents can happen suddenly, especially in highland areas where weather conditions can change rapidly.

Authorities reminded the public, especially children and families living near rivers, to remain cautious during unpredictable weather conditions.

Safety Reminder After River Incident

Following the incident, officials urged residents in highland and rural settlements to take extra precautions when near rivers and streams, particularly during rainy conditions.

They warned that sudden water surges can occur without warning and can quickly become dangerous even in shallow rivers.

The public is advised to avoid riverbanks during heavy rainfall and to supervise children at all times in high-risk areas.

Safety Awareness in Highland Areas

The incident highlights the importance of river safety awareness in Cameron Highlands, where rapid weather changes can lead to sudden water level increases.

Authorities continue to monitor river conditions in the region and encourage communities to report any hazardous situations immediately.
