US Launches Fresh Strikes on Southern Iran Amid Fragile Ceasefire and Ongoing Nuclear Talks

Kuala Lumpur – The United States has carried out new military strikes on southern Iran, targeting missile sites and vessels attempting to lay mines near the strategic Strait of Hormuz, according to US Central Command.

The strikes, described as “self-defense” actions, were focused on areas near Bandar Abbas, a major Iranian port city and naval base. Explosions were reported in the area, with local officials investigating the incidents.

US Central Command spokesperson Capt. Tim Hawkins stated that the operation was necessary “to protect our troops from threats posed by Iranian forces,” while emphasising that the US military continues to exercise restraint during the fragile ceasefire that began on April 8.

Tensions Persist Despite Talks

The latest strikes come as diplomatic efforts between Washington and Tehran continue in Doha, Qatar. Iranian officials acknowledged some progress in negotiations but firmly stated that a comprehensive deal to end the conflict is not imminent.

Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmail Baqai said: “We have reached a conclusion on a large portion of the issues… but to say that this means the signing of an agreement is imminent — no one can make such a claim.”

President Donald Trump had earlier hinted that a deal was close, but later instructed US negotiators not to rush. US Secretary of State Marco Rubio also suggested a possible agreement could be reached soon.

Background of the Conflict

The current tensions escalated after the US and Israel launched wide-ranging strikes on Iran on February 28. Iran retaliated by attacking Israel and US-allied states in the Gulf and effectively disrupting shipping through the Strait of Hormuz — a critical chokepoint for global oil supplies — causing oil prices to surge worldwide.

Despite the ceasefire, both sides have maintained military pressure: Iran continues to control Gulf shipping lanes, while the US Navy has imposed a blockade on Iranian ports.

What’s Next?

It remains unclear how these new strikes will affect the ongoing peace negotiations. Analysts warn that repeated incidents could derail diplomatic progress and further destabilise the region.

The situation is being closely watched by global markets, as any escalation in the Strait of Hormuz could trigger another spike in energy prices.
