Kuala Lumpur — The United Kingdom’s signals intelligence agency, GCHQ, has estimated that nearly 500,000 Russian soldiers have been killed since Russia launched its full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022.

The stark figure was revealed by GCHQ Director Anne Keast-Butler during her first major public speech, delivered from the historic Bletchley Park — the famous World War II code-breaking centre.

In her speech, Keast-Butler warned that Russia is not only suffering massive losses in Ukraine but is also actively waging an undeclared hybrid war against the UK and other NATO nations. She accused Moscow of:

• Targeting critical national infrastructure
• Interfering in democratic processes
• Conducting espionage and sabotage operations
• Launching cyber attacks and disinformation campaigns

The GCHQ chief stated that Russia is “relentlessly targeting” critical infrastructure, supply chains, and public trust across the United Kingdom.

Zelensky’s Admission of Ukrainian Losses

For comparison, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky stated in February 2026 that Ukraine had lost 55,000 soldiers since the start of the full-scale war.

Keast-Butler also highlighted growing concerns over:
