Middle East Tensions Rise as Houthis Kill Six and US-Iran Standoff Keeps Strait of Hormuz Restricted

KUALA LUMPUR, AUGUST 2026 — Regional tensions intensified on Wednesday as conflicts involving Iran, the United States, Yemen’s Houthis and Israel continued to affect key shipping routes and security across the Middle East.

A Houthi attack on a vessel in the Bab el-Mandeb strait killed six people, including three Pakistani nationals, according to Pakistan’s Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar. Another Pakistani was wounded in the attack.

The incident has increased concerns over maritime security because the Bab el-Mandeb has become even more important while the Strait of Hormuz remains effectively shut by Iran and the United States maintains a blockade on Iranian ports. The Red Sea route is an important alternative for Saudi oil exports.

Houthi forces have also increased attacks against Yemeni government troops, Saudi oil facilities and shipping linked to the kingdom, which supports Yemen’s internationally recognised government.

Meanwhile, US President Donald Trump claimed that Washington’s blockade gives the United States control over the Strait of Hormuz. Before the conflict, the waterway carried around one-fifth of globally traded oil, making any prolonged disruption a major concern for international energy markets.

Iran has continued attacks on shipping despite US military strikes and the blockade. Tehran says it will only reopen the Strait of Hormuz if Washington meets several demands, including lifting restrictions on Iranian ports.

Diplomatic efforts are continuing. Pakistan has been working to restart negotiations between Washington and Tehran, with senior Pakistani officials holding discussions with Iranian leaders. An interim agreement reached in June is due to expire on Monday after a previous ceasefire collapsed and the two sides exchanged strikes last month.

Elsewhere, Israel carried out a targeted drone strike against a suspected Hamas commander in northern Gaza, although the Israeli military did not confirm whether the target was killed. Four injured people were taken to hospitals following the strike.

The latest developments underline the growing regional impact of the conflict, with military operations now affecting the Strait of Hormuz, Red Sea, Bab el-Mandeb and Gaza, while diplomatic efforts continue to prevent another major escalation.
