Kuala Lumpur – Tensions in the Gulf escalated sharply on Wednesday as Iran launched drone and missile attacks on Kuwait, damaging the country’s main international airport and injuring more than 60 people. The United States responded with strikes on Iranian targets near the Strait of Hormuz, raising fresh concerns over the fragile ceasefire between Washington and Tehran.
According to Kuwaiti authorities, Iranian drones and missiles struck Kuwait International Airport early on Wednesday, damaging airport facilities and several diplomatic missions. One person was killed and more than 60 others were injured in the attack. Flights at the airport were immediately suspended following the strikes.
Kuwait strongly condemned the attack, describing it as a violation of its sovereignty. The incident marks one of the most serious direct strikes on a Gulf Arab state since the ceasefire between the US, Israel and Iran was agreed in April.
In response, the US military carried out strikes on Iranian positions near the Strait of Hormuz, including targets on Qeshm Island. American forces said the action was taken in self-defence after detecting Iranian missile and drone activity in the area. Tehran has yet to issue a detailed response to the latest US strikes.
The escalation comes amid stalled diplomatic efforts to reopen the Strait of Hormuz, a critical waterway for global oil supplies. The strait has remained largely closed or heavily restricted for more than three months following earlier US and Israeli strikes on Iran.
Oil prices rose nearly 2% following news of the fresh hostilities, reflecting market concerns over potential disruptions to energy supplies.
The latest round of attacks has further strained the shaky ceasefire and complicated ongoing talks aimed at de-escalating the broader conflict that began in February 2026. Both sides have accused each other of violating the truce through these recent actions.
Regional analysts warn that continued tit-for-tat strikes could derail peace efforts and increase the risk of wider confrontation in the Gulf.
