KUALA LUMPUR, June 2026 — Malaysian Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has arrived in Kazan to lead Malaysia’s delegation at the ASEAN-Russia Commemorative Summit, held from June 17 to 18. The summit marks the 35th anniversary of ASEAN-Russia relations and is expected to strengthen strategic cooperation between Southeast Asian nations and Russia.
Anwar is accompanied by Minister of Investment, Trade and Industry Johari Abdul Ghani, Economy Minister Akmal Nasrullah Mohd Nasir, and senior government officials. The visit underscores Malaysia’s commitment to enhancing economic partnerships and fostering constructive international dialogue.
According to Malaysia’s Foreign Ministry, the summit will provide an opportunity for ASEAN and Russia to review three and a half decades of cooperation while outlining priorities for the future under the ASEAN-Russia Strategic Partnership. Discussions are expected to focus on trade and investment, energy cooperation, food security, the digital economy, science and technology, education, tourism, and cultural exchanges.
The leaders are also expected to exchange views on pressing regional and international issues, reflecting ASEAN’s continued role in promoting dialogue, stability, and peaceful cooperation among nations.
During his visit, Anwar is scheduled to hold talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin to discuss ways to deepen Malaysia-Russia relations. The meeting is expected to cover strategic cooperation in areas such as trade, investment, energy security, and emerging opportunities for collaboration between the two countries.
Anwar is also expected to deliver a keynote address at the ASEAN-Russia Business Forum, attended by hundreds of business leaders from across ASEAN and Russia, highlighting opportunities for economic growth and regional connectivity.
The summit is expected to conclude with the adoption of four major outcome documents, including the Kazan Declaration on the 35th Anniversary of ASEAN-Russia Relations and a new Comprehensive Plan of Action for 2026–2030. Additional agreements on energy and cultural cooperation are also expected to be endorsed.
These documents are intended to serve as a roadmap for future cooperation and reinforce a resilient, forward-looking partnership between ASEAN and Russia.
Beyond economic cooperation, the summit is expected to address broader regional and global developments. Leaders will discuss ways to strengthen mutual understanding, enhance diplomatic engagement, and contribute to peace, stability, and prosperity across the Asia-Pacific region.
As geopolitical uncertainties continue to shape international relations, the gathering in Kazan is seen as an important platform for dialogue and cooperation between ASEAN member states and Russia.
