US Awards $500 Million to AI Startup SandboxAQ to Accelerate Next-Generation Semiconductor Innovation

KUALA LUMPUR, June 2026 — The United States government has awarded $500 million to SandboxAQ, an artificial intelligence and quantum technology startup backed by Nvidia, to accelerate the development of advanced materials and chemicals critical to semiconductor manufacturing. The investment represents one of the largest government-backed technology initiatives announced this year and underscores the strategic importance of securing semiconductor supply chains.

The funding is being provided under the U.S. CHIPS Act and aims to reduce reliance on foreign suppliers for essential semiconductor materials. SandboxAQ will focus on discovering new compounds for chip production, developing alternatives to specialized industrial chemicals, and improving the efficiency of materials used in advanced manufacturing processes.

Unlike traditional research approaches, SandboxAQ combines artificial intelligence with quantum-based simulations to analyze complex molecular interactions. This allows researchers to identify promising materials significantly faster than conventional methods, potentially shortening development cycles from years to months.

The initiative also highlights the increasing convergence of AI and quantum technologies.
