G7 Leaders Unite Behind Ukraine as Russia Faces New Sanctions Pressure

KUALA LUMPUR, June 2026 — Leaders of the Group of Seven (G7) nations concluded a series of high-level discussions in France by reaffirming their commitment to Ukraine and agreeing to increase pressure on Russia through expanded sanctions and military support measures. The summit, hosted by French President Emmanuel Macron in the lakeside city of Évian-les-Bains, focused heavily on global security, economic stability, and geopolitical challenges.

In a joint statement released during the summit, G7 leaders pledged “unwavering support” for Ukraine as the war with Russia continues. The group praised Ukraine’s recent battlefield gains and committed to enhancing military assistance, including additional air defense systems, long-range capabilities, and support for expanding Ukraine’s domestic defense production.

The leaders also agreed to intensify economic pressure on Moscow by targeting key sectors of Russia’s war economy, particularly oil and gas revenues that continue to fund military operations. The move is intended to strengthen Ukraine’s position in any future peace negotiations.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy attended meetings with G7 leaders and expressed appreciation for what he described as strong new ideas aimed at forcing Russia toward peace. Zelenskyy also called for additional air defense support and further sanctions against the Kremlin while advocating for future peace talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin.

Meanwhile, U.S. President Donald Trump emerged as a central figure at the summit after promoting a preliminary agreement with Iran designed to stabilize the Middle East and reopen the strategically important Strait of Hormuz. G7 leaders welcomed the framework agreement and expressed readiness to support its implementation, viewing it as a potential step toward reducing regional tensions and preventing nuclear proliferation.

Beyond Ukraine and Iran, discussions also focused on reducing Western dependence on China for critical minerals essential to energy, defense, and technology industries. Several leaders called for increased investment in domestic supply chains and stronger trade protections to reduce vulnerabilities in global markets.

Artificial intelligence was another major topic on the agenda, with policymakers and technology executives discussing issues related to transparency, accountability, safety, and the future impact of AI on economies and societies worldwide.

French President Emmanuel Macron sought to maintain unity among the participating nations throughout the summit, emphasizing the importance of coordinated action in addressing international conflicts and economic uncertainty. The gathering also included discussions on global trade, energy security, and preparations for the upcoming NATO summit.

Analysts view the summit as a significant display of transatlantic cooperation despite ongoing political differences among member states. While challenges remain in securing a lasting peace in Ukraine and addressing broader global tensions, the outcomes of the summit signal continued Western alignment on key international issues.
