Malaysia Eyes Broader Cooperation with Turkmenistan Amid Growing Strategic Partnership

KUALA LUMPUR, June 18, 2026 — Malaysia is looking to expand its partnership with Turkmenistan beyond traditional energy cooperation, with both countries exploring new opportunities in trade, investment, agriculture, education, tourism, and technology. The move reflects Malaysia’s broader strategy of strengthening economic ties with emerging partners across Central Asia.

Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim has placed particular emphasis on enhancing cooperation in the energy sector, where Malaysia already has a longstanding presence through national oil company PETRONAS. Recent discussions between the two countries have highlighted the potential for Malaysia to gain access to one of the world’s largest gas field zones through ongoing negotiations in Turkmenistan.

According to Anwar, the proposed cooperation could significantly strengthen Malaysia’s energy security while positioning the country as a more influential player in the global energy industry. The Prime Minister has described the opportunity as strategically important and worthy of direct government involvement.

Beyond oil and gas, both nations are exploring ways to boost bilateral trade and food security cooperation. Earlier this year, Malaysia and Turkmenistan discussed expanding market access for agricultural products, increasing research collaboration, and developing initiatives to address climate-related challenges affecting food production.

Education has also emerged as a growing area of cooperation. Malaysia remains a preferred destination for many Turkmen students pursuing higher education, particularly in engineering and energy-related fields. Officials from both countries have expressed interest in expanding academic exchanges and technical training programs.

The relationship between Malaysia and Turkmenistan has steadily strengthened over the years, supported by diplomatic ties established in 1992 and extensive cooperation in the energy sector. PETRONAS has been operating in Turkmenistan since the 1990s, making it one of Malaysia’s most significant economic partnerships in Central Asia.

Analysts believe broader cooperation with Turkmenistan could provide Malaysia with greater access to Central Asian markets while diversifying economic and energy partnerships amid an increasingly competitive global landscape. The initiative also aligns with Malaysia’s efforts to expand international trade opportunities and attract strategic investments.
