Portugal Stun Croatia as Ronaldo and Ramos Deliver Dramatic World Cup Comeback

KUALA LUMPUR, JULY 2026 — Portugal advanced to the FIFA World Cup 2026 Round of 16 after producing a dramatic 2-1 comeback victory over Croatia in a tense knockout clash at Toronto Stadium.

The Round of 32 match brought together two of football’s greatest modern icons, Cristiano Ronaldo and Luka Modrić, in what could be one of their final World Cup appearances. In the end, it was Portugal who survived the pressure and kept their tournament dream alive.

Croatia started the second half with more purpose and were rewarded in the 53rd minute when veteran winger Ivan Perišić opened the scoring. The goal gave Croatia a 1-0 lead and put Portugal under serious pressure.

Portugal had struggled to find rhythm for long periods, but the match changed in the 68th minute when Cristiano Ronaldo converted a penalty to bring the score level at 1-1. The goal was a major personal moment for the Portuguese captain as it marked his first knockout-stage goal at a World Cup.

Ronaldo’s equaliser shifted the momentum back toward Portugal, but Croatia continued to fight and remained dangerous in transition. With Luka Modrić directing play in midfield and Perišić causing problems from wide areas, Croatia looked capable of forcing extra time.

However, Portugal found the decisive moment deep into stoppage time.

In the 90+4th minute, Gonçalo Ramos scored the winning goal to complete Portugal’s comeback and break Croatian hearts. NBC Sports reported that Ramos finished at the back post to put Portugal ahead 2-1 in the final moments of the match.

The goal sparked huge celebrations among Portugal’s players and supporters, while Croatia were left with little time to respond.

For Portugal, the victory was more than just a place in the next round. It showed their ability to recover from a difficult position, stay composed under pressure and find decisive moments through both experience and squad depth.

Ronaldo once again became one of the biggest stories of the match. At 41, the Portugal captain continues to chase the one major trophy missing from his career. His penalty not only brought Portugal back into the game but also ended one of the most talked-about records of his World Cup career — the absence of a goal in the knockout stage.

Before the match, Ronaldo had scored 10 World Cup goals but had never found the net in a knockout match. His penalty against Croatia finally changed that narrative.

Ramos, meanwhile, reminded Portugal of his value as a big-game forward. His late winner gave Roberto Martinez another attacking option to rely on as Portugal move deeper into the tournament.

Croatia will feel disappointed after taking the lead and pushing Portugal close. Zlatko Dalić’s side showed discipline, experience and belief, but they could not hold on once Portugal increased the pressure late in the match.

The defeat could also mark the end of an era for Croatia. Luka Modrić, now 40, has been the heart of Croatia’s golden generation for nearly two decades. His leadership helped Croatia reach the 2018 World Cup final and finish third in 2022, but this latest campaign ended in painful fashion.

Modrić and Ronaldo had shared a long history together, including their successful years at Real Madrid. The Guardian noted before the match that both players had more than 200 international caps and that the game carried emotional weight because it could be one of their final World Cup meetings.

Portugal made one change to their starting lineup, with Rafael Leão replacing João Félix in attack, while Croatia kept an unchanged lineup for the match. Reuters reported that Portugal started with Diogo Costa, Rúben Dias, Renato Veiga, João Cancelo, Nuno Mendes, Bruno Fernandes, João Neves, Vitinha, Cristiano Ronaldo, Rafael Leão and Pedro Neto.

Croatia’s starting lineup featured Dominik Livaković, Josip Stanišić, Marin Pongračić, Josip Šutalo, Mateo Kovačić, Luka Modrić, Nikola Vlašić, Martin Baturina, Petar Sučić, Ante Budimir and Ivan Perišić.

The match was played in Toronto, a city with strong Portuguese and Croatian communities, adding extra intensity to the occasion. The atmosphere reflected the importance of the fixture, with both sets of supporters treating the knockout tie as one of the biggest matches of the tournament so far.

Portugal’s next challenge will be even tougher. They are set to face Spain in the Round of 16 after La Roja defeated Austria 3-0 in their own knockout match. Bernama reported that Mikel Oyarzabal scored twice as Spain advanced to the last 16.

The upcoming Portugal-Spain clash promises to be one of the most anticipated matches of the tournament, bringing together two European giants with deep squads, technical quality and major title ambitions.

For now, Portugal can celebrate surviving a dangerous Croatia side. The performance was not perfect, but knockout football is often about moments — and Portugal had Ronaldo and Ramos when it mattered most.

Croatia leave the tournament with pride, but also frustration. They were close to forcing Portugal into a much longer fight, only to be undone by a late goal in stoppage time.

Portugal, meanwhile, move forward with renewed belief. A comeback win, Ronaldo’s historic penalty and Ramos’ dramatic finish could give the team the emotional lift they need before facing Spain in the last 16.
