Sony To Shut Down PlayStation Store For PS3 And PS Vita Starting August 2026

KUALA LUMPUR, JULY 2026 — Sony Interactive Entertainment has announced that it will begin shutting down the PlayStation Store for PlayStation 3 and PlayStation Vita in stages starting August 2026, marking another major step in the company’s move away from legacy gaming platforms.

The first phase of the closure will involve the PlayStation Store on PS3 in Mexico, Honduras and Nicaragua beginning August 2026. The shutdown will then be expanded to several other countries in Latin America and the Middle East by the end of 2026. For other markets, the full closure of the PlayStation Store for both PS3 and PS Vita is scheduled for July 2027.

Sony said the decision was made because both older platforms can no longer fully support modern commerce system requirements, including updated payment processing standards. The company said it is also focusing more resources on newer consoles and services used by current PlayStation players.

Once the PlayStation Store is closed in affected regions, users will no longer be able to purchase new digital games or downloadable content through PS3 and PS Vita. However, Sony confirmed that previously purchased games and content can still be downloaded again through users’ PlayStation Network accounts for the foreseeable future.

The announcement is significant for longtime PlayStation fans, especially collectors and players who still use the PS3 and PS Vita. Both platforms represent an important era in Sony’s gaming history, with the PS3 first launched in the mid-2000s and the PS Vita becoming one of Sony’s final handheld gaming systems.

The closure also raises wider discussion about digital game preservation. As more gaming companies move towards online storefronts and digital-only distribution, players have become increasingly concerned about long-term access to older games, especially titles that are not available on newer platforms.

Sony had previously planned to close the PS3 and PS Vita digital stores in 2021, but reversed the decision after strong feedback from users. This time, the company appears to be moving forward with a phased closure plan, giving players more time to prepare before the global shutdown is completed in 2027.

The decision comes alongside another major change in Sony’s gaming strategy. The company has also announced that it will stop producing physical discs for new PlayStation game releases starting January 2028, further showing the industry’s shift towards digital game distribution.
