Maszlee Calls Puteri Wangsa Victory A Major Trust After Winning PKR’s Sole Johor Seat

KUALA LUMPUR, JULY 2026 – Former Education Minister Dr Maszlee Malik has described his victory in the Puteri Wangsa state seat during the 16th Johor State Election as a major trust that must be carried with full responsibility. He said the mandate given by voters was not a personal achievement to be celebrated excessively, but a sign of public confidence that must be honoured.

Maszlee, who became the only Parti Keadilan Rakyat candidate to win a seat in this Johor election, expressed gratitude to party leaders, campaign workers and supporters who stood with him throughout the campaign period. He also thanked his wife and family for their prayers, patience and support during his political journey.

In his statement, Maszlee said the people’s trust in Puteri Wangsa was a heavy responsibility. Citing the words of Islamic scholar Imam Al-Ghazali, he described trust as one of the heaviest duties to bear and asked for prayers so he could fulfil the mandate well.

Maszlee said his focus now is to defend the welfare of the people in Puteri Wangsa and bring the voice of Keadilan to Johor in the best possible way. His victory also marked an important gain for Pakatan Harapan, as the coalition managed to capture the Puteri Wangsa seat in a five-cornered contest.

According to the official result, Maszlee secured 41,821 votes, defeating Barisan Nasional candidate Teow Chia Ling, who received 36,077 votes. MUDA’s Sharifah Rashifa Syed Abdul Rashid Aljunied obtained 5,887 votes, while Parti Bersama Malaysia candidate Nicholas Paul Vincent received 2,332 votes and independent candidate Wang Wee Siong gained 227 votes.

Maszlee won the seat with a majority of 5,744 votes. The Puteri Wangsa seat was previously held by MUDA’s Amira Aisya Abd Aziz, who did not defend the seat in this election.
