KUALA LUMPUR, JULY 2026 – Police arrested a man after he was suspected of setting fire to a house belonging to his mother in Kampung Sungai Baru, Jitra, on Sunday following an alleged dispute with family members. The incident reportedly took place at about 3.15pm.
According to Kubang Pasu district police chief Superintendent Mohd Radzi Abdul Rahim, the 36-year-old suspect was believed to have entered the house after being seen by his cousin, who was operating a business nearby. The two-storey house was unoccupied at the time of the incident.
Police said the suspect was later seen exiting the house through a window about 30 minutes later, before the fire spread quickly from the living room area. His cousin then contacted the Fire and Rescue Department for assistance.
Based on the fire department’s report, about 80 percent of the house was destroyed in the blaze. The property belonged to the suspect’s 60-year-old mother, who is currently living in Pokok Sena.
Initial investigations found that the suspect allegedly acted after a quarrel with family members. Police also revealed that the suspect had several previous criminal records, including cases related to criminal intimidation and voluntarily causing hurt under the Penal Code.
The suspect also had previous drug-related records under Section 15(1)(a) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952, as well as a case under Section 7(2) of the Common Gaming Houses Act 1953.
The case is now being investigated under Section 436 of the Penal Code for committing mischief by fire or explosive substance with intent to destroy or damage a house. Police are continuing investigations to determine the full circumstances behind the incident.
