Onn Hafiz Sworn In As Johor Menteri Besar After BN Secures Two-Thirds Majority

KUALA LUMPUR, JULY 2026 – Datuk Onn Hafiz Ghazi has officially been sworn in as Johor Menteri Besar before the Acting Sultan of Johor, Tunku Mahkota Ismail, at Istana Bukit Serene in Johor Bahru. The oath-taking ceremony marked his reappointment to lead the state government after Barisan Nasional secured a major victory in the 16th Johor State Election.

The ceremony included the presentation of the letter of appointment and the official proclamation of the Johor Menteri Besar. Onn Hafiz, who is the Machap assemblyman, received renewed political legitimacy following what was described as an extraordinary mandate from voters.

Barisan Nasional won 48 out of 56 seats in the Johor State Legislative Assembly, giving the coalition a two-thirds majority. Pakatan Harapan won the remaining eight seats, while Perikatan Nasional failed to secure any seat in the election.

The result also improved BN’s previous performance in the 2022 Johor election, when the coalition won 40 seats. This time, BN added eight more seats and strengthened its position as the dominant political force in the state.

The election outcome was also notable because voter turnout increased to 68.73 percent, compared with around 53.6 percent in 2022. Despite earlier expectations that higher turnout could benefit the opposition, BN managed to expand its support, including in urban and semi-urban areas.

Among the major wins for BN were several seats previously regarded as important opposition areas, including Johor Jaya, Tangkak, Bekok, Jementah and Perling. These results reinforced BN’s strong comeback in Johor politics.

Speaking after the election result was confirmed, Onn Hafiz said the campaign period was over and called on all sides to reunite for Johor’s future. He said the responsibility now is to build the Johor that people have imagined and hoped for together.

Onn Hafiz also pledged to protect the welfare of all Johoreans regardless of background or political belief. He stressed that after winning, the state government must look after all communities, including Malays, Chinese, Indians and Orang Asli, under the spirit of Bangsa Johor.
