KUALA LUMPUR, JULY 2026 – Muar Member of Parliament Syed Saddiq Syed Abdul Rahman has been fully cleared of his previous conviction and sentence after the Federal Court dismissed the prosecution’s final appeal in a case involving funds from Angkatan Bersatu Anak Muda, better known as ARMADA.
The decision means Syed Saddiq is no longer bound by the earlier sentence of seven years in prison, two strokes of the cane and a RM10 million fine. The sentence had previously been imposed before the Court of Appeal allowed his appeal in June last year.
In a 2-1 majority ruling, Federal Court judges Datuk Che Mohd Ruzima Ghazali and Datuk Collin Lawrence Sequerah found that there was no legal or procedural error that would justify overturning the Court of Appeal’s decision.
However, Datuk Seri Abu Bakar Jais, who chaired the three-judge panel, delivered a dissenting decision. The majority ruling ultimately upheld Syed Saddiq’s acquittal and brought the prosecution’s final appeal to an end.
The case involved allegations related to criminal breach of trust, misappropriation of property and money laundering involving ARMADA funds. Another report stated that the charges included an allegation of abetting a former ARMADA assistant treasurer in criminal breach of trust involving RM1 million, a separate allegation of misappropriating RM120,000, and two money laundering charges involving RM50,000 transfers into an Amanah Saham Bumiputera account.
The Federal Court’s decision is significant as it fully removes the conviction and punishment previously faced by the former Youth and Sports Minister. It also ends a long-running legal battle that had attracted national attention due to Syed Saddiq’s position as a young political figure and elected representative.
With the prosecution’s final appeal dismissed, Syed Saddiq remains acquitted of the charges linked to the ARMADA fund case. The ruling marks a major legal and political development for the Muar MP, whose case had been closely followed by the public and political observers.
