UN Chief Urges Restraint As Gulf Tensions And Military Confrontation Rise

KUALA LUMPUR, JULY 2026 – United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has expressed deep concern over the rising tensions and renewed military confrontation in the Gulf region, as fears grow over a wider escalation involving Iran and the United States. His concern was conveyed through UN spokesperson Stephane Dujarric on Sunday.

Guterres urged all parties to exercise maximum restraint, avoid actions that could worsen the situation and take immediate steps to de-escalate tensions. The UN chief also stressed that all attacks must stop as the region faces a more fragile security situation.

According to the statement, Guterres warned that a return to full-scale hostilities would bring devastating consequences for people in the region, international peace and security, as well as the global economy. The warning reflects growing concern that instability in the Gulf could affect not only regional security but also global trade and energy markets.

The UN chief also renewed his call for the full restoration of freedom of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world’s most important maritime routes. Any disruption in the waterway could heighten risks for commercial shipping and energy supply chains.

Guterres further urged Iran and the United States to immediately resume negotiations and address unresolved issues through diplomacy. The call comes as international attention remains focused on preventing the confrontation from expanding into a wider regional conflict.
