Malaysia-Thailand Border Economic Zone And Strait Of Hormuz Crisis Take Focus In Dewan Rakyat

KUALA LUMPUR, JULY 2026 – The development of the Malaysia-Thailand Border Economic Zone and the impact of the prolonged crisis in the Strait of Hormuz are among the key issues scheduled to be raised at the Dewan Rakyat sitting today. The matters are expected to draw attention due to their links with national economic planning, border community development and Malaysia’s exposure to global geopolitical risks.

According to the Order Paper published on the Parliament portal, Datuk Adnan Abu Hassan, Member of Parliament for Kuala Pilah, is scheduled to ask the Prime Minister about the economic benefits Malaysia expects to gain from the Malaysia-Thailand Border Economic Zone. He is also seeking clarification on the mechanisms to ensure that small businesses and border communities can benefit from the development

The Dewan Rakyat is also expected to discuss the prolonged crisis in the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world’s most important maritime and energy routes. Datuk Rosol Wahid, Member of Parliament for Hulu Terengganu, is scheduled to ask the Prime Minister about the government’s assessment of the crisis and its potential impact on Malaysia’s political and economic stability.

Rosol is also seeking details on the mitigation measures being taken by the government to reduce the possible effects of the Strait of Hormuz crisis. The question comes amid growing concern over global supply chains, shipping security and energy market volatility linked to tensions in the region.

Another issue expected to be raised involves illegal racing on highways. Datuk Yusuf Abd Wahab, Member of Parliament for Tanjong Manis, is scheduled to ask the Transport Minister about the ministry’s steps to end illegal vehicle racing on highways nationwide, including incidents similar to the case reported in Simpang Renggam, Johor, on June 1.

After the question-and-answer session, the sitting is scheduled to continue with the first reading of two bills: the Statistics Bill 2026 by the Economy Minister and the National Trust Fund Bill 2026 by the Finance Minister.

The parliamentary agenda will also include the presentation of the Special Select Committee statement on proposed constitutional amendments related to separating the roles of the Attorney General and the Public Prosecutor. The statement is expected to be presented by Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department for Law and Institutional Reform, Datuk Seri Azalina Othman Said.

Azalina previously said the committee had met seven times and refined the original amendment proposal through seven main improvements aimed at strengthening the independence, integrity and accountability of the Public Prosecutor’s institution.

The current Dewan Rakyat meeting is being held for 16 days, beginning from June 22 and scheduled to continue until Thursday. With economic development, geopolitical risk, road safety and institutional reform all on the agenda, today’s sitting is expected to cover several issues with direct implications for governance and national policy direction.
