KUALA LUMPUR, JULY 2026 – Police in Melaka have arrested a local trader suspected of being involved in 10 child sexual offence cases involving boys between March and yesterday. The case has raised serious concern over child safety and the need for stronger community awareness in public spaces.
Melaka police chief Datuk Dzulkhairi Mukhtar said the 36-year-old man was detained by members of the public at Balai Raya Taman Desa Duyong at around 6pm yesterday before being handed over to police.
According to police, the alleged cases involved 10 victims aged between eight and 13. The incidents were said to have taken place at several locations, including a playground, surau, supermarket, eatery and the suspect’s house.
Police said the suspect was believed to have approached the victims in public areas before allegedly committing acts of inappropriate physical contact. The case is being handled carefully due to the involvement of minors.
The suspect has been remanded for seven days starting today to assist investigations under Section 14(a) of the Sexual Offences Against Children Act 2017.
The investigation remains ongoing, and police are expected to continue gathering statements and evidence related to the reported cases. As the matter is still under investigation, the suspect is presumed innocent until proven guilty in court.
The case also highlights the importance of public vigilance, especially in places frequently visited by children. Parents, guardians and community members are urged to remain alert to suspicious behaviour and to report any concern involving child safety to the authorities immediately.
