Two Dead, Over 100 Injured in Crowd Crush at India’s Jagannath Rath Yatra

KUALA LUMPUR, JULY 2026 – Two devotees were killed and more than 100 people were injured following a crowd crush during a major Hindu festival in the eastern Indian state of Odisha on Thursday.

The incident occurred during the annual Jagannath Rath Yatra in the coastal city of Puri, as large numbers of worshippers gathered near the Jagannath Temple to witness the religious procession. Local reports attributed the crush to intense crowding as devotees moved through the packed festival area.

Local politician Sanjay Das Burma said Puri’s main medical college hospital had received approximately 350 trauma and non-trauma cases following the incident. He confirmed that two people had died while receiving treatment or emergency assistance.

Emergency teams responded to the congested area by providing first aid, oxygen and transportation to hospitals. Some early reports recorded lower casualty figures while the emergency operation was still underway, indicating that the total number of affected devotees continued to be updated as patients arrived at medical facilities.

The crowd surge reportedly developed during the Pahandi procession, a traditional ritual in which sacred statues are carried from the Jagannath Temple toward their ceremonial chariots. The movement of large crowds along Puri’s Grand Road created severe congestion and triggered dangerous pressure among worshippers.

Hundreds of thousands of devotees participate in the annual festival, during which statues representing Lord Jagannath, his brother Balabhadra and their sister Subhadra are brought out of the temple and placed on decorated chariots for a public procession.

Footage from the scene showed shoes and other personal belongings scattered across the ground after people attempted to leave the densely packed area. Rescue workers and volunteers helped devotees who had fainted, suffered breathing difficulties or sustained injuries in the crush.

The incident has renewed concern over crowd-management measures at major religious gatherings in India. The Puri festival experienced another deadly crowd incident in 2025, when several devotees were killed as worshippers rushed to view the deities.

Large religious gatherings in India have repeatedly faced crowd-safety risks because of the enormous number of attendees, restricted access routes and sudden movements at important moments in ceremonies. Authorities are expected to review the latest incident and assess whether additional controls are required during the remaining festival activities.
