Jasper Philipsen Wins Tour de France Stage 17 as Tadej Pogacar Keeps Overall Lead

KUALA LUMPUR, JULY 2026 — Belgian sprinter Jasper Philipsen secured victory in Stage 17 of the Tour de France after emerging from a crowded final sprint to cross the line ahead of Mauro Schmid and Olav Kooij.

The Alpecin-Premier Tech rider earned his first stage win of this year’s Tour, rewarding his team’s continued support after several unsuccessful attempts earlier in the race. Philipsen was expertly guided into position by teammate Mathieu van der Poel before accelerating towards the finish.

Schmid of Jayco AlUla finished second, while Decathlon CMA CGM rider Kooij took third place. Green jersey holder Mads Pedersen crossed the line in eighth, allowing Philipsen to move within seven points of the Dane in the Tour’s points classification.

Defending yellow jersey holder Tadej Pogacar completed the stage safely and retained his overall lead. The UAE Team Emirates-XRG rider remained four minutes and 32 seconds ahead of second-placed Remco Evenepoel in the general classification.

Stage 17 covered 174.7 kilometres from Chambery to Voiron and began aggressively, with several early crashes affecting the peloton. Among those involved was Tom Pidcock, who entered the stage eighth overall, although he was able to return to the race quickly. Seventh-placed Lenny Martinez also recovered after going down.

A group of riders moved ahead with around 100 kilometres remaining, while Philipsen, Pedersen, Pogacar and Evenepoel initially stayed in the main group. The leading contenders for the yellow jersey showed little interest in challenging the sprinters for the stage victory.

Pedersen later attacked with about 65 kilometres left and joined a breakaway that also included Ben Healy and Jasper Stuyven. Philipsen responded by joining a chasing group as the race entered its decisive phase.

Stuyven launched a solo attack with 26 kilometres remaining and opened a lead of approximately 50 seconds. However, the chasing group gradually reduced his advantage on the approach to Voiron and caught him with 3.7 kilometres left.

Josh Tarling attempted a late move inside the final kilometre, but Van der Poel brought him back before providing Philipsen with the decisive lead-out. The Belgian then found a clear path and powered to victory at the finish.

The Tour will return to the mountains in Stage 18, featuring a 185.2-kilometre route from Voiron to Orcieres-Merlette. Three consecutive mountainous stages will give Evenepoel his final opportunities to reduce Pogacar’s advantage before the race concludes in Paris.
