US Diplomats Walk Out of UN Security Council Meeting During French Representative’s Speech

KUALA LUMPUR, JULY 2026 – A diplomatic dispute between the United States and France escalated at the United Nations after members of the US delegation walked out of a UN Security Council meeting during a speech by France’s representative.

The incident occurred during a Security Council session discussing the ongoing Russia-Ukraine war and reflected growing disagreements between the two allies over international human rights leadership.

The diplomatic standoff stems from conflicting positions regarding the reappointment of UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Türk.

The United States opposed extending Türk’s four-year term, while France publicly backed his reappointment, deepening divisions between the two countries on human rights policy within the United Nations.

France’s mission to the United Nations in Geneva had earlier criticized Washington’s stance, stating that the United States was no longer serving as a global example of defending human rights and had become increasingly isolated on the international stage.

The statement drew a swift response from US Ambassador to the United Nations Mike Waltz, who argued that Türk had consistently targeted democratic nations such as the United States, the United Kingdom and Israel while being less critical of governments accused of committing serious human rights violations.

Following the walkout, Alternate US Representative to the United Nations Dan Negrea defended the decision, saying the American delegation would continue taking similar action unless France stopped making what he described as disrespectful and demeaning remarks toward other countries.

Despite the protest, France’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Jérôme Bonnafont, made no reference to the American delegation’s departure during his address.

Instead, Bonnafont reaffirmed France’s commitment to safeguarding the independence of United Nations institutions and ensuring that the organization remains capable of carrying out its international responsibilities effectively.

Volker Türk has previously drawn international attention for criticizing actions that he believes violate international law, including policies involving Israel and the United States in Palestine, as well as developments related to Iran.

Despite opposition from several countries, Türk secured another term after receiving overwhelming support from the UN General Assembly, where 144 member states voted in favor of his reappointment, 10 voted against and 13 abstained.

Since returning to office in 2025, President Donald Trump’s administration has reduced US engagement with several international institutions, including cutting financial contributions to multiple UN agencies and withdrawing from a number of UN-affiliated bodies.

Relations between Washington and Paris have also become increasingly strained over a range of issues, including NATO defense spending, trade policy and President Trump’s remarks concerning Greenland, an autonomous territory within the Kingdom of Denmark.

The two countries have also taken different approaches to recent geopolitical crises, with France and several European allies declining direct involvement in military operations involving the United States, Israel and Iran.
