ASEAN Remains Crucial Platform for Regional Peace and Stability, Cambodia Says

KUALA LUMPUR, AUGUST 2026 — ASEAN remains an essential platform for maintaining peace, stability and cooperation in Southeast Asia as the region faces increasingly complex geopolitical challenges, according to Cambodian Foreign Minister and Deputy Prime Minister Prak Sokhonn.

In an official message marking ASEAN’s 59th anniversary, Sokhonn highlighted the regional bloc’s role in transforming Southeast Asia over nearly six decades from a region once characterised by division and uncertainty into one increasingly defined by dialogue, cooperation and shared prosperity.

He said ASEAN’s continued contribution to regional peace is guided by key frameworks including the ASEAN Charter and the Treaty of Amity and Cooperation in Southeast Asia, commonly known as the TAC.

These frameworks have helped establish principles governing relations among ASEAN members and their engagement with external partners.

However, Sokhonn warned that Southeast Asia is now operating in an increasingly uncertain global environment marked by renewed armed conflicts, escalating geopolitical tensions and growing pressure on international law and multilateralism.

Against this backdrop, he said ASEAN cannot afford to remain passive.

Rather than merely responding to global developments, Sokhonn argued that the regional grouping must play an active role in shaping changes that affect Southeast Asia and the wider international community.

He emphasised that ASEAN unity and centrality remain particularly important as member states navigate modern geopolitical challenges.

Maintaining a cohesive regional position can strengthen ASEAN’s ability to engage major global powers while preserving the interests and strategic autonomy of Southeast Asian nations.

Sokhonn also reaffirmed Cambodia’s commitment to strengthening ASEAN’s unity, resilience and global relevance.

Cambodia joined ASEAN in 1999 and has since participated in the bloc’s diplomatic, political and economic initiatives.

The Cambodian foreign minister said his country remains committed to upholding both the ASEAN Charter and the TAC, not only as guiding principles but also through their practical implementation.

His remarks come as ASEAN continues to confront several major regional and international challenges, including geopolitical rivalry, security concerns and instability in Myanmar.

Myanmar’s ongoing conflict has remained one of the bloc’s most difficult political issues, with ASEAN continuing efforts to advance its regional peace initiative despite limited progress.

The situation has highlighted both the importance and limitations of ASEAN’s consensus-driven diplomatic approach.

Thailand has recently pursued what has been described as calibrated re-engagement with Myanmar, while ASEAN continues to push for progress on its peace framework and broader regional concerns.

ASEAN was established on August 8, 1967, through the Bangkok Declaration signed by Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore and Thailand.

The organisation subsequently expanded as Brunei, Vietnam, Laos, Myanmar and Cambodia joined the bloc. Timor-Leste became ASEAN’s 11th member in October 2025.

Today, the organisation brings together all 11 Southeast Asian countries and serves as a central diplomatic platform for regional cooperation.

Beyond political and security issues, ASEAN also plays an important role in economic integration, trade, social development and cooperation with major international partners.

Sokhonn’s anniversary message underscores the challenge facing ASEAN as it seeks to maintain its relevance amid a rapidly changing international order.

Growing competition among major powers, armed conflicts and pressure on multilateral institutions are increasing the importance of regional cooperation and diplomatic dialogue.

For Cambodia, strengthening ASEAN’s unity and resilience will remain essential if the bloc is to continue playing a meaningful role in maintaining Southeast Asia’s stability while representing the collective interests of its members on the global stage.
