KUALA LUMPUR, AUGUST 2026 — Around 390 people were stranded at Nakabusa Onsen in Azumino, Nagano Prefecture, after a landslide struck the area following heavy rain on Saturday night.
The landslide damaged a bridge on the only road connecting the hot spring resort with central Azumino, leaving hotel guests and hikers unable to leave the area. No injuries were reported.
Nakabusa Onsen is also a popular starting point for mountain hikes. Those stranded included guests staying at local accommodation as well as hikers staying in mountain lodges.
Local authorities later constructed a temporary bridge to allow the affected visitors to leave the resort safely.
According to the Japan Meteorological Agency, Azumino recorded around 50 millimetres of rainfall within one hour on Saturday night, contributing to unstable ground conditions and the landslide.
The incident highlights the risks posed by intense rainfall in mountainous areas, where landslides can quickly disrupt roads and isolate communities or tourist destinations.
