KUALA LUMPUR, AUGUST 2026 — A 36-year-old Malaysian woman died after she was believed to have suffered a heart attack while driving a multi-purpose vehicle (MPV) along Jalan Macalister, George Town, on Thursday.
The vehicle subsequently crashed into two motorcycles parked outside a restaurant along the road. Police clarified that the motorcycles seen in a viral video of the incident were unoccupied at the time and that no riders were involved in the crash.
Northeast District Police Chief ACP Abdul Rozak Muhammad said the accident involved only the woman driving the MPV. She was taken to Penang Hospital, where she later died while receiving treatment.
Preliminary information indicated that the woman may have suffered a heart attack around the time of the accident. However, police stressed that a post-mortem examination will be conducted to determine the exact cause of death.
The incident gained public attention after a one-minute and 52-second video circulated on social media showing a vehicle crashing into two motorcycles outside a restaurant.
According to the report, the incident was believed to have occurred at approximately 2pm on August 13. The footage led to questions about whether motorcyclists had been struck, prompting police to clarify that both motorcycles were parked and had no riders on them when the collision occurred.
The woman was the only person directly involved in the road accident, according to the police statement.
Although a heart attack is currently suspected, authorities have not yet established the official medical cause of death.
The post-mortem examination will therefore be important in confirming whether the woman suffered a cardiac episode before losing control of the vehicle or whether another medical factor contributed to the incident.
Police have opened an investigation under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987, which relates to causing death by reckless or dangerous driving.
The case remains under investigation while authorities await the results of the post-mortem examination and continue reviewing the circumstances surrounding the crash.
