KUALA LUMPUR, AUGUST 2026 — Tourism industry players in Semporna, Sabah, have urged authorities and stakeholders to take stronger action to improve the district’s tourism experience following a viral social media post discouraging tourists from visiting the area.
Semporna Local Bumiputera Tourism Operators Association (PUSPABUMI) secretary Anyrishah Mohd Shah said improving the destination requires coordinated efforts involving local authorities, government agencies, enforcement bodies, tourism operators, local communities and visitors.
Cleanliness remains one of the most frequently raised concerns. The association called for a more organised waste-management system, consistent rubbish collection, stronger enforcement against littering and continuous public awareness efforts.
Tourism operators also highlighted the importance of improving customer service, business ethics and overall service standards to ensure visitors receive a better experience. Boat operators were urged to comply with safety procedures, including operating standards and speed limits.
The association also encouraged local communities to pursue tourism-related income through organised activities without placing unnecessary pressure on visitors. At the same time, tourists were reminded to respect Malaysian laws, environmental protection measures, safety requirements and local customs.
The concerns come as Semporna continues to play an important role in Sabah’s tourism economy. The district welcomed 560,077 visitors last year, while another 157,673 arrivals were recorded during the first four months of 2026.
Sabah authorities have also been working to strengthen tourism governance in Semporna, including regulatory enforcement and efforts to ensure local businesses receive a greater share of the economic opportunities generated by the industry.
Industry players hope that improvements in cleanliness, safety and service quality can protect Semporna’s reputation as one of Malaysia’s leading island and diving destinations while ensuring tourism growth remains sustainable for local communities.
