KUALA LUMPUR, AUGUST 2026 — Ukraine could become capable of striking targets inside Russia with its own domestically produced ballistic missiles within three to six months, according to former Ukrainian defence minister Mykhailo Fedorov.
Ukraine has so far relied mainly on long-range drones and cruise missiles for attacks deep inside Russian territory. Ballistic missiles, however, would be significantly harder for Russian air-defence systems to intercept because of their speed and flight characteristics.
Ukrainian defence manufacturer Fire Point is currently developing ballistic missiles and carried out a test launch in June. Fedorov, who previously played a major role in developing Ukraine’s drone warfare capabilities, said Kyiv must continue advancing its military technology as Russia also improves its weapons systems.
The development comes as Ukraine intensifies long-range attacks against Russia. Russian authorities said Ukraine launched one of its largest drone assaults of the war over the weekend, while Moscow claimed its forces intercepted 1,478 Ukrainian drones within 24 hours. A fire was also reported at a distribution warehouse near Moscow.
Ukraine’s military separately said it struck a missile-fuel production facility in Russia’s Rostov region, which it said produces solid rocket propellant used in multiple-launch rocket systems and other missiles.
Meanwhile, Russian attacks continued across Ukraine. Strikes on Kryvyi Rih killed people and wounded others, including at an ArcelorMittal steel plant, while additional casualties were reported in the Zaporizhzhia region. President Volodymyr Zelenskyy renewed calls for stronger air-defence support from Ukraine’s allies.
The European Union is also considering expanding sanctions against Russian entities. EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas said she wants the number of sanctioned Russian entities to increase by about one-third as European governments seek to maintain pressure on Moscow over the war.
Ukraine’s push to develop its own ballistic missiles could significantly expand Kyiv’s long-range strike capabilities and reduce its dependence on foreign-supplied weapons as the conflict with Russia continues.
