Jonas Vingegaard Ends 2026 Season as Tour de France Crash Delays Recovery

KUALA LUMPUR, AUGUST 2026 — Danish cycling star Jonas Vingegaard has officially ended his 2026 racing season, with Team Visma | Lease a Bike confirming that the 29-year-old is still experiencing the effects of the collarbone fracture he sustained during last month’s Tour de France.

Vingegaard crashed out of the Tour on July 19 during Stage 15, falling with around 20 kilometres remaining. Medical examinations subsequently revealed a fractured collarbone and multiple abrasions, with the severity of the fracture requiring surgery.

Although there had been hopes that he could return later in the year, potentially for the UCI Road World Championships in Montreal, his recovery has taken longer than initially hoped. His team has now ruled out any further racing before 2027.

Vingegaard explained that he had already planned a period of recovery after an intense first part of the season, but the Tour de France injury delayed the point at which he could properly resume training.

The Dane said he is currently unable to return to the physical level required to prepare properly for another major race during the remaining months of 2026. His attention will therefore shift towards building a strong foundation for next season.

Team Visma | Lease a Bike also confirmed that Vingegaard remains affected by the collarbone injury rather than simply choosing to end his season because of an already-light autumn programme.

Head of racing Marc Reef said the team had always intended to review Vingegaard’s programme after the Tour de France. Following his heavy racing schedule and subsequent injury, the team concluded that concentrating on 2027 was the most sensible option.

One of the biggest consequences of the decision is that Vingegaard will not compete at the 2026 UCI Road World Championships in Montreal, scheduled for September 20-27. A potential late-season appearance at Il Lombardia in October is also now off the table.

Before confirmation of his season-ending absence, the World Championships had been considered a possible comeback target, despite Vingegaard not originally having a fixed post-Tour race programme.

The decision means cycling fans will have to wait until 2027 to see the Dane back in competitive action.

Vingegaard entered the Tour de France as one of the major contenders for the yellow jersey and was still involved in the general classification battle when his race ended abruptly on Stage 15.

He crashed on a corner during the closing kilometres of the mountainous stage and was unable to continue. Team officials immediately reported that he was in significant pain, before later examinations confirmed the collarbone fracture.

The accident brought an unexpected end to Vingegaard’s Tour after five consecutive podium finishes in the race, including his overall victories in 2022 and 2023.

He underwent successful surgery following the accident, but the recovery process has ultimately made a competitive return this year unrealistic.

Despite the disappointing end to his season, Vingegaard enjoyed an outstanding first half of 2026.

The Dane won Paris-Nice, followed that success with overall victory at the Volta a Catalunya, and then claimed the Giro d’Italia.

Victory at the Giro was particularly significant, adding another Grand Tour title to a résumé already featuring two Tour de France victories.

Those results underline how productive Vingegaard’s season had been before the Tour crash forced him onto the sidelines.

His Tour de France campaign, however, remains the major unfinished chapter of the year. The crash prevented him from continuing his fight for another yellow jersey and shifted his priorities almost immediately from competition to rehabilitation.

Vingegaard and Team Visma | Lease a Bike have not yet announced his specific targets for next season.

The rider said those goals will be discussed with the team over the coming period, while Reef confirmed that staff will work with Vingegaard to determine the appropriate training build-up and race objectives for 2027.

For now, there will be no rushed comeback.

The decision to abandon the remainder of the 2026 season gives Vingegaard several months to recover fully from the injury before beginning another campaign at the highest level of professional cycling.

After victories at Paris-Nice, the Volta a Catalunya and Giro d’Italia, his season ends earlier than expected — but the focus has already shifted towards ensuring he returns at full strength in 2027.
