KUALA LUMPUR, AUGUST 2026 — Negotiations over seats for the upcoming Melaka state election could become a major test of the “Malay unity” narrative promoted by Barisan Nasional (BN) and Perikatan Nasional (PN), according to political analyst Ahmad Zaharuddin Sani Ahmad Sabri.
Zaharuddin, from Global Asia Consulting, said Umno and PAS — the key parties within BN and PN respectively — could both present strong arguments for contesting constituencies with large Malay electorates.
BN enters the negotiations with a strong organisational structure and a proven electoral record in Melaka. PN, meanwhile, has developed its own appeal as an alternative to Umno among segments of the Malay electorate, potentially making the allocation of Malay-majority seats more difficult.
The challenge goes beyond deciding which coalition contests particular seats. Zaharuddin said the ability to transfer votes between Umno and PAS supporters could prove even more complicated than the seat negotiations themselves.
The issue is particularly important because BN and PN have recently demonstrated a willingness to cooperate electorally. However, both coalitions still depend heavily on overlapping sections of the Malay electorate, meaning negotiations could expose competition between their respective grassroots and leadership structures. Previous analysis has also highlighted seat allocation as a potential source of tension in their informal partnership.
How both sides handle the Melaka negotiations could therefore provide an early indication of whether their political cooperation can move beyond short-term electoral arrangements into a more sustainable partnership.
For BN and PN, reaching an agreement without alienating supporters will be crucial. Failure to compromise could lead to competition in the same constituencies, while a successful arrangement could strengthen their argument that cooperation between the two blocs can consolidate Malay political support ahead of future elections.
