Bursa Malaysia Opens Lower as FBM KLCI Slips to 1,731

KUALA LUMPUR, AUGUST 2026 — Bursa Malaysia opened lower on Wednesday as early selling pressure pushed the benchmark FTSE Bursa Malaysia KLCI (FBM KLCI) into negative territory.

As of 9.27am, the benchmark index had declined 2.15 points to 1,731.21. It opened at 1,731.97 and traded within a range of 1,727.81 to 1,731.97 during the early session.

Market breadth was also negative, with 127 decliners compared with 57 gainers, reflecting cautious sentiment among investors during the opening period.

Weakness was not limited to the benchmark index.

The FBM70 Index dropped 27.98 points, or 0.15%, to 18,183.68, while the FBM100 Index declined 16.65 points, or 0.13%, to 12,627.89.

However, the FBM Small Cap Index managed to buck the broader downward trend, edging up 1.17 points, or 0.01%, to 16,105.22.

The mixed performance showed that while overall market sentiment remained cautious, buying interest was still present in selected smaller-capitalisation counters.

Sector-wise, construction stocks were among the weaker performers, with the sector index declining 2.08 points, or 0.68%, to 301.60.

The financial services segment also moved lower, slipping 0.35% to 1,768.88 during early trade.

In contrast, the energy index gained 1.19 points, or 0.15%, to 779.60, while the consumer products and services index edged up 0.20 points, or 0.04%, to 493.10.

The contrasting sector movements highlighted selective positioning among investors rather than broad-based selling across all parts of the market.

Among the most actively traded stocks, Zetrix topped the list with approximately 309.27 million shares changing hands. The counter rose by half a sen to 64 sen.

Pentech was also heavily traded, advancing 3.5 sen to 32.5 sen on volume of 208.76 million shares.

Meanwhile, Lotte Chemical Titan (LCTitan) jumped seven sen to 38 sen, with about 196.32 million shares traded during the morning session.

Nexgram remained unchanged at six sen with 189.89 million shares changing hands, while Ho Wah Genting (HWGB) gained two sen to 12 sen on trading volume of 165.87 million shares.

Among the stronger-performing counters, Dutch Lady Milk Industries climbed RM1.02 to RM32.52, making it one of the session’s leading gainers.

Hong Leong Bank added 10 sen to RM22.70, while KPJ Healthcare gained nine sen to RM3.11.

Carlsberg Brewery Malaysia also moved higher, adding six sen to reach RM14.56.

These gains provided some support to the market despite the overall negative opening.

On the losing side, Malaysian Pacific Industries (MPI) recorded one of the sharpest declines, falling 80 sen to RM47.22.

United Plantations lost 34 sen to RM32.26, while Allianz Malaysia declined 18 sen to RM22.00.

Genting Plantations slipped 10 sen to RM5.55, while Jaya Plywood Industries fell nine sen to RM1.96.

The declines in several higher-priced counters contributed to the softer tone across Bursa Malaysia during the opening session.

The early market performance showed investors taking a more selective approach, with weakness in major sectors such as construction and financial services offset partly by gains in energy, consumer stocks and several heavily traded lower-priced counters.
