Israeli Military Activity Intensifies in Southern Lebanon as Civilians Face Growing Pressure

BEIRUT, AUGUST 2026 — Civilians in southern Lebanon are increasingly bearing the consequences of a sharp rise in military activity as tensions between Israel and Hezbollah continue despite diplomatic efforts to stabilise the border region.

The United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) said it recorded an average of 137 projectiles being fired each day between August 5 and 16, highlighting the intensity of military activity across the area.

The figure climbed to 208 projectiles on Saturday and 185 on Sunday, according to UNIFIL, as the security situation continued to deteriorate.

UNIFIL warned that civilians were once again paying the highest price as military tensions rise.

Many families have been displaced or forced to change their daily routines because of insecurity and uncertainty, adding further pressure on communities that have already endured months of conflict.

The peacekeeping mission said it continues to conduct patrols and monitoring operations while removing road obstacles, reducing risks from explosive materials and helping maintain access routes for humanitarian assistance.

The deteriorating security environment has made daily life increasingly difficult for residents who remain in southern Lebanon, particularly in areas close to Israeli-controlled positions and locations that have experienced repeated military operations.

The escalation comes despite a US-brokered framework agreed between Lebanon and Israel on June 26, aimed at reducing hostilities and establishing a process linked to the disarmament of Hezbollah and the deployment of the Lebanese military in the south.

Hezbollah has rejected disarmament while Israeli forces remain in Lebanese territory, arguing that Israel must withdraw before discussions over the group’s weapons can take place.

Israel, meanwhile, says it will not fully withdraw from southern Lebanon until Hezbollah has been disarmed and the security threat to northern Israel has been removed. Israeli Defence Minister Israel Katz has instructed the military to prepare for an extended presence in the area until those objectives are achieved.

The United States has said a permanent Israeli military presence in southern Lebanon would not be consistent with commitments under the framework, which envisions a progressive withdrawal linked to verified Hezbollah disarmament and the Lebanese army assuming responsibility for security.

The renewed tension has already resulted in deadly attacks.

On August 15, at least 11 people were killed in Israeli strikes in southern Lebanon, according to the Lebanese Health Ministry. Seven people were reported killed in an attack on a house in the village of Ansar, while four others died in Deir El Zahrani.
