KUALA LUMPUR, AUGUST 2026 — Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia (BERSATU) remains part of the Perikatan Nasional (PN) coalition in Perlis for the time being, as the coalition’s top leadership has yet to make a final decision on the party’s position in the state.
Perlis Menteri Besar Abu Bakar Hamzah said BERSATU’s status in the state remains unchanged until the PN Supreme Council issues an official decision.
He explained that BERSATU elected representatives in Perlis received their mandates under the PN banner and continue to be governed by the country’s anti-party hopping provisions.
Abu Bakar said BERSATU assemblymen and members of Parliament in Perlis remain tied to their existing political mandate.
He said the party would continue observing the current arrangement until a decision is made, with any future course of action likely to be considered after the dissolution of the Perlis State Legislative Assembly.
His remarks come amid continuing uncertainty over BERSATU’s relationship with PN at the national level.
The issue has drawn greater attention following disagreements between BERSATU and PAS, the two major parties that have formed the core of the opposition coalition.
The latest debate over BERSATU’s position followed earlier remarks by party president Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin, who said BERSATU planned to establish a new and stronger political coalition with several other parties after the Negeri Sembilan state election.
According to the report, the proposed arrangement could involve parties within Ikatan Prihatin Rakyat (IPR), including Parti Bumiputera Perkasa Malaysia (PUTRA) and Parti Bersepakat Hak Rakyat Malaysia (URIMAI).
That announcement subsequently raised questions about whether BERSATU would remain part of Perikatan Nasional.
PAS president Tan Sri Abdul Hadi Awang had earlier been reported as saying that BERSATU’s membership in PN had effectively lapsed following Muhyiddin’s announcement about forming a new coalition.
However, Abu Bakar stressed that no formal PN Supreme Council decision has yet been made regarding BERSATU’s status in Perlis.
Despite the uncertainty at the federal opposition level, the Perlis government has continued operating under its existing political arrangement.
Earlier reports following tensions between PAS and BERSATU also indicated that the state administration would continue functioning as usual while awaiting decisions from the PN leadership.
This is particularly significant in Perlis because political changes involving coalition membership could have implications for elected representatives and the stability of the state administration.
Abu Bakar’s latest statement indicates that, for now, the state leadership is maintaining the status quo.
The Menteri Besar also said BERSATU should review several of its recent decisions, particularly those involving membership dismissals and its relationship with other parties in PN.
He argued that restoring ties between coalition partners should be an important consideration for the party.
According to Abu Bakar, BERSATU may have plans to explore other forms of political cooperation, but any future direction would ultimately depend on the political environment at the time.
