Gordon Murray S1 Debuts as 681 HP V12 Manual Supercar Inspired by the McLaren F1

KUALA LUMPUR, AUGUST 2026 — Gordon Murray has returned to one of the formulas that helped define the modern supercar, unveiling the Gordon Murray Special Vehicles S1, a lightweight V12-powered machine designed around analogue performance and driver engagement.

The S1 made its public debut at The Quail during Monterey Car Week 2026, where its appearance immediately drew comparisons with Murray’s most famous creation, the McLaren F1. Like the F1, the new model places the driver in a central seating position and provides space for two additional passengers.

However, the S1 is not presented as a replica of the F1. Instead, GMSV has combined familiar Murray design principles with modern carbon-fibre engineering, an extraordinarily high-revving naturally aspirated engine and a greater focus on road usability than the more extreme S1 LM.

At the heart of the S1 is a 4.2-litre naturally aspirated V12 developed with Cosworth.

The engine produces approximately 681 horsepower and reaches its peak power at an extraordinary 12,100 rpm, delivering the kind of high-revving character that has become increasingly rare as the supercar industry shifts towards turbocharging, hybrid technology and electrification.

Power is sent through a six-speed manual gearbox, preserving the direct mechanical connection between driver and car that remains central to Gordon Murray’s engineering philosophy.

The combination of a naturally aspirated V12 and manual transmission makes the S1 particularly unusual among modern high-performance vehicles.

One of the S1’s most distinctive characteristics is its three-seat cabin, with the driver positioned in the centre and two passenger seats slightly behind on either side.

The layout immediately recalls the McLaren F1, which Murray designed in the early 1990s and which has since become one of the most celebrated supercars ever produced.

For the S1, however, the interior has been engineered with more touring comfort than the track-focused S1 LM. It features more generously padded seats, additional sound insulation, easier access through its dihedral doors and conventional roll-down side windows.

These changes are intended to make the S1 more suitable for longer road journeys without sacrificing the lightweight, driver-focused character associated with Murray’s cars.

Although the S1 shares its underlying philosophy with the limited-production S1 LM, its exterior design takes a noticeably different direction.

The enormous aerodynamic components found on the LM — including its prominent rear wing and aggressive track-focused bodywork — have been removed in favour of a cleaner and more elegant silhouette.

Reports indicate that the project initially began as a more restrained version of the S1 LM but eventually developed into an almost completely redesigned car. Only the roof is said to remain shared between the two models.

The finished design carries subtle visual references to the McLaren F1, including styling details inspired by a 1995 Monaco show car, while maintaining a distinct identity for Gordon Murray Special Vehicles.

Weight remains one of Gordon Murray’s fundamental engineering priorities.

The S1 makes extensive use of carbon-fibre construction, with GMSV pursuing minimal mass not simply to improve acceleration, but also steering response, braking, handling and overall driver feedback.

Despite gaining comfort features compared with the S1 LM, reports indicate that the S1 is expected to remain extremely light — potentially even lighter than Gordon Murray Automotive’s already lightweight T.50.

That philosophy reflects Murray’s long-standing belief that reducing mass can improve almost every aspect of a performance car without relying on increasingly large power outputs.

The S1 LM was developed as a more extreme tribute to the 1995 Le Mans-winning McLaren F1 GTR, featuring highly aggressive aerodynamics and a bespoke 4.3-litre Cosworth V12 producing more than 700 horsepower.

The new S1 moves in a different direction.

Its suspension has been configured to provide greater road comfort, while the ride height has been increased compared with the LM. The exterior aerodynamic package is also less aggressive, reinforcing the S1’s role as a high-performance grand touring machine rather than an uncompromising track-focused special.

Yet the essential formula remains remarkably pure: lightweight bodywork, rear-wheel drive, a naturally aspirated V12, manual transmission and a central driving position.

Gordon Murray Special Vehicles plans to produce just 64 examples of the S1, making it one of the most exclusive new supercars introduced during Monterey Car Week 2026.

Reports indicate that all planned production allocations have already been reserved, demonstrating strong demand despite official pricing not being publicly disclosed.

The production number is significantly higher than the S1 LM, of which only five examples are being produced.

An S1 LM chassis previously achieved US$20.6 million at auction, demonstrating the extraordinary demand surrounding Gordon Murray’s most exclusive modern creations.

The S1 arrives at a time when the performance-car industry is rapidly embracing electrification, hybridisation and increasingly complex transmission systems.

Gordon Murray Special Vehicles is deliberately taking the opposite approach.

With its 12,100-rpm naturally aspirated V12, six-speed manual transmission, lightweight carbon structure and central driving position, the S1 is engineered to prioritise sensation and involvement rather than simply chasing headline acceleration figures.

The resemblance to the McLaren F1 is impossible to ignore, but the S1 represents Murray’s attempt to reinterpret those principles more than three decades later using modern materials and engineering.

For enthusiasts who still value naturally aspirated engines and manual gearboxes, the S1 stands as one of the clearest examples yet that the analogue supercar formula remains alive in 2026.
